Preemptive Fox News Backlash Retort v1

So Fox News has wrapped it's head around some new information about the possible use of a VAT (Value Added Tax) in the US. Since it's a tax, and inherently evil, they're cranking up the Spin Machine to HIGH to create more rhetoric and anger on the right.

Before I get ahead of myself, I'll post some information about what a VAT is. This is opinion-free content:

VAT:

Normally, VATs are usually assessed when a good moves through production. The tax hits the raw material, the intermediate, and the finished product - and eventually the consumer.

At each step, the next person/manufacturer deducts the tax from the previous stage adding a level of security (hard to dodge) to the tax. In the end step, the final tax is assessed on the consumer.

150+ foreign countries use a VAT to raise revenue.

Why:

The US will have a standing debt at the end of the year of almost $13.8 trillion, with a yearly deficit standing at $1.4 trillion.

VATs are hard to dodge and work in a proportionate level to all consumers.

Current tax rates are unable to account for spending, even with large reductions in current spending.

Now, for the opinion.

It should not come as a surprise to you that Fox News is using this concept to level their guns at the current administration and their "liberal spending sprees", but we should keep in mind that it was the Bush administration that started 2 wars with no funding (borrowing as they went).

The Obama administration is slowly attempting to end the war in Iraq, and HOPEFULLY end the crap in Afghanistan too.

But while we're on the subject, do you know what the largest drain on our tax revenues is? The Military / National Security - hauling off roughly 67 cents on the dollar. Here's a fun image showing you where it goes.

In fact, war and the military in general are little more than very fabric of this country, ingrained so deeply that it is nearly impossible to separate this country from our own military. And before you say anything, realize that my position isn't "Anti-Troop", it's "Anti-Military". The people who are in the military do a job, and I respect them for the that, but it's the over-arching system at-large that is the real problem.

Don't take me the wrong way; the military serves a purpose and it would not serve our country well to go without, but the course we're on, unaltered, will never allow us to recover from severe and crippling fiscal debts.

To drive home this point, I would beg you to read the farewell address from President Dwight D Eisenhower as he ended his term in the White House. He warns us of the Military Industrial Complex and the effects that it would/has had on our economy. If that's too long for you, please at least read this, his "Chance for Peace" speech:

"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."

So What's the Point?

The point is that we're being led astray. Our fiscal situation, as a country, is dire and unsustainable and the Right's buckpassing of fiscal irresponsibility has been on BOTH sides of the aisle for years. It is important that we realize that the deficits are not entirely on the backs of "social welfare" programs and "spendocrats" and pork barrel projects, but on an inherently unsustainable downward spiral that has been propagated by people at the top who stand to make a lot of money by maintaining the status quo.

So, Fox News viewers or not, please get your facts straight and realize that we cannot continue to do what we do as a country without tax increases, and EVERYONE is responsible for that.

Two Santa Claus-es?

Let me end this bit of rambling with an idea colorfully called the "Two Santa Claus Theory"

The Two Santa Claus Theory maintains that the American people (and frankly all people) like getting things. So when the GOP is in office, they lower taxes (at least for the upper class), and when the Dems are in office, they spend money and give the people more their money.

Obviously, this is an unsustainable situation because BOTH scenarios are furthering the problem and neither party can stay in power if they discontinue their respective tactics.

The Big Healthcare Hoopla

After watching the President's speech on healthcare tonight, I'm fully sold. Personally, I'd like a single-payer system, but a public option is a good start.

Over my life, I've experienced nearly all the scenarios of the healthcare system:
  • Uninsured
  • Under-insured
  • Denied coverage
  • Received charity care
  • Foregone treatment due to likely cost
and I'm tired of it. Including myself, I know a significant number of people that are currently uninsured or face possible severe economic trauma for an accident that could come at any moment.

Believe what you want really, but if you HONESTLY, SERIOUSLY think that the way insurance companies operate is fair and in the best interest of the people and this country, I'd love to hear it.

Socialism? Maybe in a loose definition of the term. But, if you think about it, insurance companies NOW operate under a basic definition of socialism in that the costs gained from ALL payers go towards the welfare of the people who need the care. Why is a public option any different ESPECIALLY when one of its primary concerns is to operate a self-sufficient entity?

The strawmen really come out to play when the right guffaws and says with a goofy grin on their face, "The GUBMENT can't run anything! I'm not going to trust them with my healthcare!" These arguments are weak at best, and stupid at worst. Grow up. Get a good argument and present it. PROVE why this is a bad idea when NEARLY EVERY OTHER 1st world democracy on the planet got rid of for-profit healthcare YEARS ago and, by and large, they outperform the US's system in nearly every sense.

EDIT: I just reread the posting directly under this one. Take it as a example. I had a mild, but potentially dangerous medical problem. Uninsured, the costs for simple blood tests and EKGs were over $550. Luckily, through cash payment and charity care, I was able to reduce this to about $200, but this is no way to handle the uninsured, and ultimately, this comes out of everyone's pocket. Sorry for not dying guys. BOOTSTRAPS OR BUST.

Health Update

So it turns out, I'm not dead and I might even have 3 or 4 more good years in me, if I'm lucky - if I'm not, I'll live to be 104.

I was diagnosed (nearly 5 days later than expected) with a "Benign Premature Ventricular Complex", or in medical terms, "my heart was all fucked up and shit, but it ain't gon' kill a nigga."

They took blood too and so far, it came back a-ok, but it'll be a few days till my thyroid results come in - after that, I have an official clean bill of health and they'll chalk it up to stress or moonrays or something else. The bill from all the shit probably won't do my stress level much good though.

The Waiting Game

I'm currently in the process of applying for a government training grant to go back to school for (something not sure yet what) and I'm working through Work One (the unemployment office) to get this done.

After my initial meeting, which including an honest to god TEST that a well-rounded 5th grader could have passed, I went and talked with a woman in the back office. She informs me that I'll need my layoff letter from the company and some other stuff to get the ball rolling. I come back a few days later with the paperwork, and she's busy so I get introduced to Niki, the case manager.

Niki is not busy, so she decides to speed things up for me - BUT WAIT! My layoff letter includes the WORD "termination" (I was not terminated) so I have to track down my old HR rep. from BBH and have HER talk to Niki. 6 FUCKING DAYS later I finally get a response from my HR rep (who is an angel BTW) but not a peep from Niki. I go in to see Niki today, the only day she's in the Plymouth office, and she's not in because of the storm. Great. So the other woman in the office sends her an email hoping to get a response, and I'm still waiting.

Waiting is the theme behind this terribly written short story.

As an aside, never EVER go to the Unemployment office. Beg, steal, sell your body - whatever you have to do to make ends meet, just DON'T GO THERE.

Round 2 of waiting.

Wednesday morning, I awoke to the soothing sounds of the snowscraper guy outside the window. I let a very reasonable amount of time pass and got fed up and went out to deal with him. I talked to him for about a minute, in which time he was a total fuck and refused to do his work quickly like everyone else, and I left. Unrelated to this constant bullshit or not, I then developed a heart arrhythmia - Happy days.

I didn't really notice it till later in the day thinking it was just a nervous tick, which I'm prone to, but I took my pulse, and sure enough my heart isn't firing 100%. We jet off to urgent care around 7pm only to find that their one ECG machine is down and I'll have to go to the ER. Knowing the ER blows, I refuse and ask to be checked out there ($56 to be seen by Dr, $hundreds at the ER) and end up going to the ECG the next day (yesterday).

Results of this EXTREMELY IMPORTANT HOLY SHIT MY HEART MIGHT EXPLODE test that I was supposed to get the result of within 2 hours? Still fucking waiting.

No hurry guys - take your fucking time.

Dark Knight

The hype delivers.

The Joker is the best villain since Hannibal Lecter.
